Lawyer George J. Wallace contributed to changes in bankruptcy legislation
John George Wallace, 65, consumer credit, the lawyer insisted on the restructuring of bankruptcy law two decades, died of lymphoma on February 20 in its second home in Belfast, Maine. He lived in Alexandria.
During 15 years before having a practising lawyer, M. Wallace has written articles on consumer issues and has taught at several universities. From 1983 to 2002, he specialized in bankruptcy, housing and credit issues.
From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Wallace also served as adviser to the Coalition for good legislation on bankruptcy, a group lobbying banks and credit institutions, the success of the reform of bankruptcy requested. Their efforts led to the passage of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.
Mr. Wallace testified repeatedly before Congress. During the year 2003 on behalf of the coalition, he expressed support for the action, while U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee consultation. He told committee members that more than 1.5 million consumer debtors in bankruptcy, more than six times the deposit rate by the year 1978, as the last major revision of bankruptcy law was made.
“The laws are fundamentally wrong, and the need for reform is necessary and urgent,” he said.
“Our economy can not afford a situation where the bill of U.S. consumers and debtors, win in relief bankruptcy to pay higher prices, because others have a great debt of Eve and then use bankruptcy often irresponsible and dishonest. ”
Mr. Wallace was born in Omaha and grew up in Detroit, where his father was an English professor at Wayne State University. He graduated cum laude from Yale University in 1964 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1967, where he is attending the Law Review.
He began his career as a teacher of morality. He taught law at Tulane, Stanford and Rutgers universities and the universities of Virginia and Iowa.
While in Iowa from 1968 to 1978, he began a legal aid clinic and was one of the main authors of the Iowa Consumer Credit Code.
He practiced law full time in New Jersey before moving to Washington during 1989. He was General Counsel passenger services mortgages and later with society Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott. After his retirement in 2002, he returned to write and university research.
In addition, he founded the Centre for statistical studies, a consulting firm that specializes in collecting and analyzing data on consumer credit, housing and redistribution.
Mr. Wallace, has lived half the year in Belfast, appreciated the exploration of the coast of Maine with his wife on his yacht. He also spent wood processing, gardening and hiking.
