Elephant Artificially Inseminated

The National Zoo and a team of German veterinary scientists performed artificial insemination last week on Shanthi, the zoo’s 30-year-old Asian elephant and the mother of Kandula, its 4-year-old male calf.

Kandula was conceived by artificial insemination conducted by the same team of scientists in 2000.

The zoo hopes to add several elephants to the three it has now and to house them in a proposed larger facility.

It will be four months before the zoo’s scientists know whether the artificial insemination procedure worked. If Shanthi conceives, she will give birth to a calf in about 22 months.
